By Katie Baker of Los Altos earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She now works in the accounting department of Gold Circle Films, in Beverly Hills.

Aaron Mathew Waters of Los Altos earned a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Curry College, in Milton, Mass.

Kendra Barkoff, daughter of Sharon and Rodger Barkoff of Los Altos Hills, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Washington University, in St. Louis, Mo.

Andrew Singh Grewal, Andrew Chi Kin Fong and Brian Ming Fong of Los Altos Hills and Michael Sheh-Yang Chang and Tyson Holbrook Dirksen of Los Altos earned bachelor’s degrees from Brown University, in Providence, R.I.

Serena Chang of Los Altos was named recipient of the Katherine B. Brock Prize for 2001-02 at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, N.J. The award goes to a freshman woman who has shown outstanding community service, concern for others and commitment to Dartmouth.

Hector Gonzalez of Mountain View graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Boston College.

Shannon Snook, daughter of William and Susan Snook of Los Altos and a junior at Homestead High School, has been selected to participate in the Resident Honors Program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Snook has also been awarded the USC Presidential Scholarship Award and will major in biology at USC.

Stephanie L. Fong, daughter of Vincent and Linda Fong of Los Altos Hills, earned a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, in Amherst, Mass.

Erin Straw, daughter of William and Ann Straw of Los Altos, earned a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Wash.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
