Brothers Mike and Chris Jensen of Los Altos started off their summer vacations and their Junior golf tournament season with wins and personal-best low scores.
Mike, 16, won the overall championship at the 70th annual East Bay Junior, held last week at the Alameda Golf Course. More than 150 golfers took part in the two-day tourney.
Mike, an incoming junior at St. Francis High, shot an opening round 1-over-par 72. The second day, he came up with his personal best score of 68 to tie Lodi’s Brian Ward for first place.
The tie forced a sudden-death playoff, which Mike won on the first hole with a par.
This marked Mike’s second win of the year and his final-round 68 qualified him for entry into the Junior Worlds International Junior next month in San Diego.
The following day, Mike’s brother Chris, 14, also shot a personal-best round.
Chris shot a 1-under 71 to claim the 14-15-year-old age group at the Palo Alto Junior Classic.
“Everything was going my way,” Chris said of his round. “I feel like I got my game going pretty early this summer.”
Chris was just a stroke away from tying the overall champion’s score.
Chris and Mike will try to qualify for the USGA Junior Amateur in early July.
