Museum joins Los Altos celebration

The Los Altos History Museum will present an exhibit, “Los Altos: Celebrating 50 Years of Community,” Aug. 22 through January 2003.

As part of the city’s yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of its incorporation, the exhibit will commemorate significant accomplishments in each decade from the 1950s to the present. It will begin with the controversy surrounding incorporation itself and will include authentic artifacts representing each decade. There will also be a hands-on activity center for children, with toys typical of each decade.

Permanent exhibits at the Los Altos History Museum include “Crown of the Peninsula: Los Altos Land Use Over Time,” the J. Gilbert Smith History House (house museum) and outdoor agricultural exhibits. The museum is located in an apricot orchard, which is part of the City of Los Altos Civic Center, at 51 San Antonio Road.

Hidden Villa

seeking farm guides

Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos Hills needs volunteers one morning a week to guide the nearly 20,000 schoolchildren who are expected to visit the farm this school year. Volunteer times are Tuesday to Friday mornings, for a minimum of two hours.

U.N. store

seeks volunteers

The United Nations Association Store, 552 Emerson Ave., Palo Alto, is seeking volunteers for three-hour shifts, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

This non-profit store has the full range of UNICEF gifts and cards. It also has, in its Information Center, videos, books and magazines for classroom curriculum use. All proceeds go directly to support the United Nations. For more information, call 326-3170.

Rape crisis

volunteers needed

The Rape Crisis Center of the YWCA in Santa Clara Valley needs dedicated volunteers for its 24-hour crisis line. volunteers must complete the 40-hour state certified training, which begins Sept. 9. Crisis line advocates provide crisis counseling and emotional support for survivors of assault and their family members, as well as information and referral for the community.

History museum

seeks volunteers

The Los Altos History Museum is looking for museum store sales volunteers, tour docents, resource volunteers and interns. Sales volunteers and docents are needed noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. For more information, logon to www.losaltoshistory.org.

Riding institute

seeks volunteers

The Westwind Riding Institute, located at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road, Los Altos Hills, is searching for energetic volunteers who will help groom and lead horses, as well as walk beside riders during their lessons.

The institute is a non-profit organization that offers riding lessons to children with physical handicaps 3:45-5 p.m., Mondays and Thursdays.

No experience is needed to volunteer, just a love of animals and dedication to the very special children of the community. For more information, call 947-8680.

E-mail notification

at Los Altos library

The Santa Clara County Library recently began sending notices, such as titles of holds and overdue notices, to patrons via e-mail. To sign up for e-mail notification, patrons should obtain a form at the Los Altos main library reference desk and turn it in at the circulation desk.

At the Woodland library, patrons should ask at the circulation desk. Patrons who sign up will no longer receive such notices through the post office.

Service agency

needs volunteers

The Community Services Agency needs volunteers to work one to two hours a week to help provide food to local low-income families and the homeless. Volunteer work would include the pickup and delivery of donated food from local markets to the agency’s Food and Nutrition Center. Weekday morning positions are available.

Girl Scouts

aiding homeless

The Girl Scouts’ Shelter Program provides after-school educational experiences to more than 400 homeless children at four separate county shelters. The program offers help with leadership skills, decision making, conflict resolution and recreational activities.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
