Town Crier Staff Report
Los Altos Police rescued a woman from the hands of her allegedly abusive fiance last week before he barracaded himself in their Lassen Street home for eight hours.
Police arrested Jay Sprout, 45, June 17 for domestic violence resulting in injury. Police said he allegedly hit his fiancee in the stomach while she was recovering from abdomen surgery. She suffered minor injuries, police said.
Police said the Los Altos woman called 911 at 1:52 a.m., June 17, from her home.
Officers were able to help her exit the house before her fiance locked himself in an upstairs bedroom. Officers called the Los Altos Police SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams when the man refused to come out.
Police said the man was known to possess several weapons, some of which they confiscated while rescuing the woman.
The SWAT team was able to talk with the man about seven hours later, at around 9:30 a.m. He surrendered at 10 a.m., police said.
Sprout is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 9.
