By Teter takes second

Mountain View resident Nicole Teter placed second in the women’s 1,500-meter run June 8 at the Oracle U.S. Open Track and Field Meet at Stanford University. Teter ran the race in 4 minutes, 11.70 seconds.

Tennis wrap

The Blach Junior High tennis team placed fifth and rival Egan finished seventh in this year’s MidPeninsula Tennis Patrons’ middle school program. Pinewood placed ninth in the 12-team league, which concluded play in May. The MTP is run by Los Altos resident Annelies Geelen, who also coaches Egan.

Get your kicks

The Calichicas under-19 women’s soccer team next week holds its final soccer clinic of the year for girls 13 and under. The clinic starts at 9 a.m., Monday through Friday, at Mountain View High. The Calichicas feature players from Mountain View, Los Altos and St. Francis highs. For more information, logon to www.calichicas.org. Look for a feature on the clinic in next week’s Town Crier.

Softball players sought

A new summer softball team for girls 16-18 is forming in the Los Altos area. The team seeks all position players. It is described as a “low-key” team that will have few practices and play in just three or four Bay Area tournaments. For more information, call Bernie Quintero at 965-8153.

Wanted: coaches

Los Altos High needs head coaches for varsity softball, girls soccer and gymnastics, plus assistants for football. If interested, call Monica Lodge at 960-8857. Mountain View High seeks junior varsity coaches for girls volleyball, and boys water polo. If interested, call Dan Navarro at 940-4626.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
