By MV-Whisman district chooses superintendent

The Mountain View-Whisman School District announced June 10 that it has chosen Jim Negri as the superintendent of the newly merged district. Currently, Negri serves as deputy superintendent of the Pleasanton Unified School District. He replaces Patricia Bubenik, who was let go by the board of trustees in October. This will be Negri’s first job as superintendent.

MV-LA PTA Council gives to district

The Mountain View-Los Altos Parent-Teacher Association Council presented its gifts to the Los Altos School District at its board of trustees meeting, June 10. The monetary gifts donated by the PTAs totaled over $1.2 million. Total volunteer hours were 148,933. The council extended the hours at a blended rate of $25 per hour, with the value of the volunteer hours totaling $3.7 million. The total value of goods and services given by the district’s PTAs is $4.9 million.

State poll on education

Approximately 42 percent of California voters think the state’s public school system needs to be reformed, with 14 percent thinking there should be a complete overhaul. Four percent think the schools are just fine. The poll of 650 registered California voters was conducted by Fairbanks, Maslin, Maullin & Associates for the California Network of Educational Charters March 11-14. Los Altos Library summer movies

The Los Altos main library will show family movies this summer.

Family movies are rated G or PG and are for all ages. They are scheduled for 2 p.m., June 3, June 22, July 13, July 27, Aug.10, Aug. 17 and Aug. 24.

Movies for teens, (PG and PG13 rated movies for ages 13-18) are scheduled for 7 p.m., June 7, June 14, June 21, June 28, July 12, July 19, Aug. 2, Aug. 9, Aug. 16 and Aug. 23. For information, call 948-7683.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
