By Fine arts speaker at Los Altos library

Kaye Payne will speak at 7:30 tonight on 31 rarely seen works by Flemish painter Michael Sweerts on exhibit at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. The free lecture is at the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos.

Payne, who heads the outreach speakers program for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, also will talk about Sweerts’ contemporaries Bernini, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Rubens. Payne specializes in relating art to social history. She holds an education degree from UC Berkeley with a special intterest in art history.

The lecture is sponsored by Friends of the Los Altos Library.

Assemblywoman at coalition event

The Peninsula Democratic Coalition legislative luncheon is scheduled noon, June 29, at Chef Chu’s Restaurant, San Antonio Road and El Camino Real, Los Altos. Assemblywoman Rebecca Cohn (D-24) will be the guest speaker, delivering a report from Sacramento and answering questions.

The luncheon cost is $17 and reservations are required. Call 949-1000 for reservations or more information.

Assemblyman hosts sidewalk chat

Assemblyman Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) will host sidewalk office hours in downtown Los Altos on from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Community Plaza, State and Main streets.

Simitian invites community members to visit and bring questions and ideas regarding state legislative issues. Free brochures on a variety of topics will be available.

“I encourage individuals who are interested in state issues affecting our community to stop by,” said Simitian. “I look forward to meeting local residents, hearing their views and concerns, and answering questions.”

Cultural exchange program needs host families

The Center for Cultural Interchange is conducting a search for host families for foreign students during the 2002-2003 academic year. The stay will last 10 months.

Host families will not be paid, and are responsible for providing students with a bed and two meals a day.

Deadline for the coming academic year has already passed but anyone interested in more information on the program can call (888) ABROAD1.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
