Misa Therese Tomari died May 22. A native of San Jose, she was 20.

Miss Tomari was a lifelong Mountain View resident. She attended St. Simon’s Elementary School near her home, and most recently attended De Anza College.

Miss Tomari had a sharp wit and a willigness to discuss every issue, family members said.

She struggled with serious health problems almost since birth.

Miss Tomari was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Taichi Tomari and James J. Grady. She is survived by her parents, Kazuo and Kathleen Tomari; siblings, Yumi and Kenji; grandmothers, Teru Tomari and Marion Grady of Mountain View; uncles and aunts, James Grady, Carollane Grady, Thomas Eastman, Maura Eastman and Sue Grady; cousins William Grady, David Priest, Michael Grady and Amy Eastman; and many other family and friends.

Allison Barker Walker

Allison Barker Walker died May 21. A native of Australia, she was 96.

Mrs. Walker came to the United States in 1932 where she met her husband, Frederick Benjamin Walker. She was a skilled and well-known seamstress, an avid gardener and homemaker.

Mrs. Walker is survived by children, Penelope Hutchins, Jacqueline Ray and Ron Walker of Los Altos; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Judy Holloway

Judy Holloway died May 22. A native of Ohio, she was 65.

Mrs. Holloway was co-owner of Consolidated Termite Company of Menlo Park.

She was the widow of Hubert Holloway. She is survived by her children, Sandra, Steve and Robert; and six grandchildren.

Ruby Meeker

Ruby Meeker died May 31 in Los Altos. A native of North Dakota, she was 87.

Mrs. Meeker was a self-employed florist.

She was the widow of Arthur Meeker, who died in 1989.

She is survived by her son, Gary Meeker of Mountain View and two grandchildren.

Gregory Dale Salas

Gregory Dale “Grand Daddy” Salas of Mountain View died May 29. He was 78.

He served in WWII as an army pilot. He graduated from the University of Texas with a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering and was an innovative engineer and an avid small craft sailor.

He is survived by three children; Melissa, Kim and Casey; five grandchildren and sister, Isabelle Carpenter of Fort Worth, Texas.

A memorial service was held June 6 at the Church of Latter Day Saints, Los Altos.

LaVant Judson Gutheil

LaVant Judson Gutheil of Los Altos died May 31. A native of Iowa, he was 87.

He was an engineer at Lockheed, a member of the Three Lights Lodge No. 651 of Menlo Park, The Scottish Rite, a 33rd degree Mason, a member of the BPOE No. 1471, Palo Alto, the Lockheed Employees Recreational Association and past Scout Master of Troop No. 37.

He was preceded in death by his wife Fauneal Adele Gutheil, and is survived by his children Judy Lee Danell of Mountain View, LaVant Judson Gutheil Jr., Laurence Foster Gutheil and Mary Gutheil Anderson of Los Altos; his brother, Earl “Spike” Francis Olson of Iowa; 11 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Services were held June 7 at Foothill Congregational Church, Los Altos.

Daphne ‘Laurie’ Nickle

Daphne “Laurie” Nickle died May 31 in Salinas. She was 88. Her husband, Ferril “Nick” Nickle, preceded her in death.

She is survived by children Patricia J. Carlson of Hollister and David F. Nickle of Honolulu; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She and her husband lived in Mountain View after raising their family, and later moved to Watsonville when her husband retired.

Graveside services were held June 4 at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto.

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
