Five months ago, Union Presbyterian Church introduced a casual worship service, Breakfast at Union, that has grown in popularity. Breakfast is served 8-8:30 a.m. every Sunday, followed by worship, which ends by 9:25 a.m.

Families have breakfast and worship together around the table. The service typically includes a clip from a recent film, guitar praise music and a message that is often interactive. Children enjoy the service and the opportunity to sit and color at the table.

“This worship service is particularly attractive to families with young children and people who like a contemporary worship service in a casual setting,” said Pastor Mike Clark.

“I enjoy the comfortable, friendly table atmosphere,” said Julia Vaccarello, a 19-year-old college student. “It provides a great way to meet and get to know people in church. Also, I appreciate the clear biblical teaching and like having a full day ahead of me after church.”

One 8-year-old girl commented that what she likes best about the breakfast is that she can stay with her family during the whole service, rather than leaving for a children’s program.

“I started coming to the service because my children like Cocoa Puffs cereal which they can’t get at home,” said Brian Cilker, a father of five. “What appeals to me is the 8 a.m. start time. I am an early riser by nature. I also enjoy the bagels, fresh fruit and gourmet coffee. Breakfast at Union is a wonderful worship service for my family.”

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
