There were few surprises at the 34th annual Mountain View Open, as the top-seeded players in three of the four divisions captured titles.

The tennis tournament, featuring several players highly ranked in Northern California by the United States Tennis Association, was held over Memorial Day weekend at Cuesta Park.

Top seed Michael Jessup of San Jose took home the men’s singles crown, edging defending champ and second seed Jan Tillikainen (Reno) 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (6). The May 27 final “was a classic baseline match,” according to Mountain View Open co-director Kathy Wheeler.

Jessup collected $500 for winning the headline match, which drew more than 500 spectators.

The top seed in women’s singles, Maria Cole (Santa Cruz), earned her first tournament title - and $300 - with a straight-set win over Pinewood School sophomore sensation Lejla Hodzic. Cole beat No. 2 Hodzic (Cupertino) 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

“Maria is the more experienced player and that favored her in the end,” Wheeler said. “But Lejla is a very exciting player with a fabulous career ahead of her.”

The mixed doubles crown went to top seeds Mark Fairchilds (Aptos) and Leticia McCaig (Ceres), who dispatched unseeded Ray Byrum and Eva Jackson 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

The only upset of the tourney - and a minor upset at that - was in men’s doubles. Second seeds Brian Cummings (Soquel) and Jessup topped No. 1 Fairchilds and Tillikainen 6-2, 7-5.

Wheeler said this year’s Open was “a terrific tournament,” thanks to the high level of competition.

There were 173 players signed up for the event, including seven from Los Altos. Organizers handed out a total of $2,500 in prize money.

The tournament was sponsored by the Mountain View Tennis Club, the City of Mountain View Parks and Recreation Department and the Los Altos Tennis Club.
