By LASD honors Dick Liewer

The Los Altos School District has scheduled a celebration to honor Assistant Superintendent Dick Liewer’s 35 years of service to the district, 4-7 p.m., June 11, at Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave. Tickets are $15 per person, and the public is invited.

Anyone unable to attend, may donate to the personal gift for Liewer by sending a check payable to Janie Boscacci, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos, CA 94024.

The Los Altos Educational Foundation has established a scholarship fund to honor Liewer, which will be used to provide teacher training.

To donate to this tax-deductible fund, make checks payable to the Liewer Fund, LAEF and send to P.O, Box 98, Los Altos, CA 94023. For more information, call the district office at 941-4010.

LAHS Choral performance

The Los Altos High School Performing Arts Department has scheduled performances of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., June 2, at Eagle Theater at Los Altos High School, 201 Almond Ave.

The program will feature the collective efforts of the LAHS choral music department, alumni soloists and professional orchestra members. Tickets are $8-$10.

For more information, call 960-8843.

‘Save our Staff’ making progress

At the May 20 Los Altos School District Board Meeting, the parent fund-raising group, “Save our Staff,” stated that they have received $545,000 through their phone-athon, with less than 50 percent of the pledges in.

SOS is a non-profit fund-raising effort to reinstate as many teachers as possible, after the district’s recent $4.4 million in budget cuts.

LASD Summer School classes available

The Los Altos School District still has space available in some of its summer school classes.

If your child is entering fifth, sixth or seventh grade this fall, he or she may enroll in the following classes: Introduction to Puppetry, Drama/Theater, French Conversation, Jazz Band, You Be the Judge, Outdoor Adventures, Health and Study Skills, and Insects.

Registration information is available at the district office, located at 360 S. San Antonio Road, Suite 15.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
