NBC3 sports director Raj Mathai, a 1989 graduate of Los Altos High, will be the honorary coach at Sunday’s Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon.

The event, slated to start at 8 a.m., will be held at De Anza College in Cupertino.

The race will feature different distances for each age group. Those in the 8-and-under division will swim 25 yards, bike one mile and run a quarter-mile. The 9-10 division will swim 50 yards, bike three miles and run a half-mile. The 11-12 division will swim 100 yards, bike three miles and run a half-mile. The 13-14 division will swim 200 yards, bike four miles and run a mile.

Registration deadline is Friday and the field is limited to 500 participants. Individual registration is $35; a family with two children is $60 and a family with three children is $85.

Every competitor will receive a participation medal, T-shirt, swim cap, water bottle and a goody bag. Awards and prizes will be handed out to the first three places, boy and girl, in each age group.

The event will also feature food, beverages and post-race entertainment.

Mathai has been sports director at NBC3, a television station in San Jose, since 1998. He will be the subject of a cover story scheduled to appear in next week’s Town Crier.

Net proceeds from this triathlon will benefit the Silicon Valley Children’s Fund, which is dedicated to developing and supporting special programs, projects and services to help and heal the abused, neglected and at-risk youth at the Children’s Shelter of Santa Clara County and the community.
