Arson investigators looking for those responsible for last month’s three-alarm fire that destroyed the Antiochian Orthodox Church of the Redeemer in Los Altos raised the reward ante for the arrest of whoever set the fire to $36,000 last week hoping to find a lead in the case.

Dennis Johnsen, arson investigator with the Santa Clara County Fire Department, said investigators still had no definite leads or motive last week.

He said investigators were continuing to interview people about the fire, but no one had stepped up with information leading to possible suspects.

“We need the community’s help,” he said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Santa Clara County Fire Department and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation of the fire, which investigators have ruled arson.

Investigators believe someone placed an accelerant inside the building and set the early morning fire April 7, causing $1 million in damages.

Anyone with information about the fire should call the ATF at (408) 535-5015; the Santa Clara County Fire Department at (408) 341-4401; or the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office at (800) 847-5077.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
