By LAH horsemanship clinic for adults

The Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee has scheduled a two-day adult horsemanship clinic, 9 a.m. to noon, June 4 and 11, at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road. The clinic is designed for beginners, age 18 and up, who have little or no experience with horses and riding. Westwind Barn will provide the horses at no cost.

Participants will spend one hour riding and the remaining two hours on stable management.

Cost is $50 per person. Enrollment is limited to six people, with preference given to Los Altos Hills residents. To enroll, call 941-6113.

Chefs Who Care’s ‘Picnic in the Park’

Chefs Who Care and Armadillo Willy’s will present “Picnic in the Park,” 5:30-7:30 p.m., June 11, at the Cuesta Park barbecue area, at Cuesta Drive near Grant Road, Mountain View. Proceeds from the event benefit the Community Services Agency, which helps needy individuals and families.

The picnic buffet menu includes ribs, chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, cornbread, muffins and ice tea.

Museum joins Los Altos celebration

The Los Altos History Museum will present an exhibit, “Los Altos: Celebrating 50 Years of Community,” Aug. 22 through January 2003.

As part of the city’s yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of its incorporation, the exhibit will commemorate significant accomplishments in each decade from the 1950s to the present.

It will begin with the controversy surrounding incorporation itself and will include authentic artifacts representing each decade. There will also be a hands-on activity center for children, with toys typical of each decade.

Permanent exhibits at the Los Altos History Museum include “Crown of the Peninsula: Los Altos Land Use Over Time,” the J. Gilbert Smith History House (house museum) and outdoor agricultural exhibits. The museum is located in an apricot orchard, which is part of the City of Los Altos Civic Center, at 51 San Antonio Road.

Federated Woman’s Club to honor past presidents

The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos will honor its past presidents at its meeting on June 5 at Michaels’ at Shoreline Restaurant, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.

The club was organized in 1957 with 115 members. Its objective is to fulfill the needs of the community, and in the past it has spearheaded several activities including a drive for building the youth center, which was dedicated in 1961.

The club has furnished a room at El Camino Hospital, provided listening tables, glass showcases, reference books and a projector for the library, donated 10 benches and four stone receptacles for refuse in downtown Los Altos and donated to the Garden House Building Fund.

A scrapbook showing the origins of the Woman’s Club as well as a scrapbook on the youth center will be on display in the Los Altos History Museum.

Membership in the club, which is a non-profit, charitable organization, is open to all women in the area.

Nakamatsu featured in benefit concert

A benefit recital concert featuring renowned pianist and Foothill College alumnus Jon Nakamatsu will be presented at 3:30 p.m., June 23, in the Smithwick Theater, Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Nakamatsu became the first American in 16 years to win gold at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997.

He was rewarded with a two-year tour of the world, receiving rave reviews throughout the United States and Europe.

The concert proceeds will benefit Foothill College fine arts programs.

Advance tickets are $60, general; $125 for Gold Circle patrons. Gold Circle tickets include an after-concert reception with the artist, preferred seating and free parking.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
