Annelies Geelan of Los Altos was recently featured in Inside Tennis Magazine for her community involvement in the sport. Geelan 18 years ago started the intermediate school tennis league that local junior highs Blach and Egan compete in. Geelan, who coaches the Egan team, recently won the Community Tennis Committee’s Most Valuable Volunteer Award.

Get your kicks

The Mountain View-Los Altos Cougars, a Class III CYSA soccer team for under-14 girls, has three openings for the fall. Tryouts are Thursday, Monday and May 29. For more information, call Laurent Schaller at 948-2891.

Swim school sign-ups

West Bay is accepting sign-ups for its summer swim school, set for June 18-Aug. 1 at Los Altos High. The Monday through Thursday schedule is 4-5:30 p.m. for high school swimmers; 5:30-6:30 p.m. for Grades 1-4 and 6:30-7:30 p.m. for Grades 5-8. Cost is $225. For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
