Sines misses NorCal cut
Prior to last week’s Central Coast Section boys golf championships, St. Francis High coach Dave Ferriera predicted his squad would need to shoot 290 to claim the team title.
It turns out Ferriera wasn’t that far off.
The Lancers shot 289 at the May 14 event, beating runner-up Menlo by a comfortable six strokes.
“Most of what we talked about came to fruition,” Ferriera said a day after his team won the title at Rancho CaƱada Golf Club in Monterey. “It was pretty exciting.”
Part of the thrill came from watching Alvin Lata - a freshman recently called up from the junior-varsity team - post St. Francis’ best score of the day. Lata shot a two-under-par 70, nine strokes better than he did on the same course a week earlier at the CCS regional.
Sophomore Mike Jensen also improved nine strokes from the regional, recording the Lancers’ second-best score with a 71.
Sophomore Kevin Lozares - St. Francis No. 1 player throughout the season - shot 74, as did teammate Chris Whalen, a junior.
Sophomore Brett Giurlani and senior Todd Scanlin shot 79 and 81, respectively, but their scores did not affect the team total, which counts only the top four finishers from each school.
“It was a very good team effort and we would have won with five or six scores,” Ferriera said. “We did a very nice job all the way through.”
The Lancers were scheduled to compete in the Northern California regional championship this past Monday at Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro. St. Francis won the NorCal title a year ago.
NorCal results will appear in next week’s Town Crier.
Los Altos High’s J.B. Sines, competing in the individual portion of the CCS championships, came in 18th. The senior shot 76, which was not good enough to qualify for the NorCal event.
