Enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres when officials at the Los Altos senior center hold an open house 4-7 p.m., Thursday, to celebrate facility renovations at the center.

Pet parade set for Saturday

The 55th annual Kiwanis Pet Parade is scheduled to begin 10 a.m., Saturday, in downtown Los Altos. The parade route begins at First Street and loops around Main and State streets. Included are costumed pets and owners, school bands, scouts and other groups. Participants are encouraged to arrive at First Street near Main no later than 9:30 a.m.

Rotary art show this weekend

The Los Altos Rotary 27th Annual Art Show, featuring 200 selected artists, is scheduled 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at Lincoln Park in Los Altos, between Edith Avenue and Main Street.

AAUW features business owners

Three local women business owners will be the focus of the American Association of University Women dinner, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Garden House in Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos.

The three women featured in the program are Lee Murphy, owner of Calla Boutiques, specializing in distinctive clothing for women, with locations in Los Altos and Menlo Park; Dr. Carol Meschter, founder of Comparative Biosciences, a biomedical services company in Mountain View; and Sharon Shipley, proprietress of Mon Cheri Cooking School & Catering. She also teaches cooking classes through Foothill and De Anza colleges community education.

Dinner will be catered by Mon Cheri Cooking School. Reservations are $15 per person. For reservation or/ information, call 941-8353.

Rhododendron Society meeting tonight

The De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society meeting will be held 7:30 p.m., tonight, at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. Mike McCullough will give a slide presentation on the Maddenii rhododendrons, which flourish in the Bay Area. For information, call 851-1313.

Community Service Award Recipient named

Bob Adams of Los Altos has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Los Altos/Mountain View District of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors’ Community Service Award. The public is invited to a special luncheon honoring Adams 11:30 a.m., Thursday, at Michael’s at Shoreline restaurant next to the Shoreline Golf Course in Mountain View.

The Silicon Valley Association of Realtors is a 3,000-member real estate trade association and homeowner advocacy group serving Silicon Valley and the Mid-Peninsula.

St. Joseph festival this weekend

The 16th annual St. Joseph Parish Festival is scheduled Friday through Sunday at 1120 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View. There will be carnival rides, an international blend of food and a variety of entertainment for all ages.

Headlining this year’s festival will be Dr. Loco and his band.

Reading classes through rec dept.

Reading classes for school-age children will be offered in Los Altos through the Los Altos Recreation Department. The programs meet once a week for five weeks. Classes will begin the week of June 17, and a second class will begin the week of July 22. Tuition is $269 per student.

For children in preschool through third grade, the programs focus on the phonics and comprehension skills required to become a fluent, successful reader.

The programs for fourth grade through eleventh grade focus on achieving substantial gains in reading comprehension, reading speed, vocabulary and study skills.

A program is also offered for high school seniors, college students and adults that emphasizes increases in reading speed while improving concentration, comprehension and recall.

All of the programs encourage an interest in reading for pleasure. Instructors are provided by the Institute of Reading Development.

Museum joins Los Altos celebration

The Los Altos History Museum will present an exhibit, “Los Altos: Celebrating 50 Years of Community,” Aug. 22 through January 2003.

As part of the city’s yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of its incorporation, the exhibit will commemorate significant accomplishments in each decade from the 1950s to the present. It will begin with the controversy surrounding incorporation itself and will include authentic artifacts representing each decade. There will also be a hands-on activity center for children, with toys typical of each decade.

Permanent exhibits at the Los Altos History Museum include “Crown of the Peninsula: Los Altos Land Use Over Time,” the J. Gilbert Smith History House (house museum) and outdoor agricultural exhibits. The museum is located in an apricot orchard, which is part of the City of Los Altos Civic Center, at 51 San Antonio Road.

Gallery 9 schedules Kasle monotypes

Gallery 9 has scheduled the exhibit “Another Place, Another Time,” monotypes by Maida Kasle of Menlo Park, through May 25.

Kasle reflects her interest in people in her painting and printmaking. Most of her people come from the glamorous and not-so-glamorous past, and are able to evoke pathos as well as humor.

The public is invited to a reception for the artist 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Gallery 9, 143 Main St., Los Altos.

Nakamatsu featured in benefit concert

A benefit recital concert featuring renowned pianist and Foothill College alumnus Jon Nakamatsu will be presented at 3:30 p.m., June 23, in the Smithwick Theater, Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Nakamatsu became the first American in 16 years to win gold at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997.

He was rewarded with a two -year tour of the world, receiving rave reviews throughout the United States and Europe.

The concert proceeds will benefit Foothill College fine arts programs.

Advance tickets are $60, general; $125 for Gold Circle patrons.

Gold Circle tickets include an after-concert reception with the artist, preferred seating and free parking.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
