Around The Track

De Anza Division finals

At the May 2 SCVAL De Anza Division championship meet at De Anza, the Los Altos boys finished fifth with 63 points and the girls seventh with 34.

On the boys’ side, the Eagles were led by Shane Christine, who won the 400 (51.01) and anchored the second-place mile relay team (3:38).

Eric Cheng finished second in the 300 hurdles (42.18), Andrew Van Straaten placed second in the high jump (6-2) and Matt Shapiro took third in the shot put (44-1). Los Altos also received fourth-place points from Taff Dirks in the two-mile run (10:31) and Geoff Rosenberg in the 110 hurdles.

The Los Altos girls were led by sophomore Allie Miller, who captured second in the high jump (5-2), third in the 100 hurdles (16.5) and third in the 300 hurdles (48.07).

The St. Francis girls placed third at the meet with 70 points.

The Lancers were led by freshman Tori Tyler, who finished third in both the mile (5:07.11) and 800 (2:22.85). Kristen Mullenberg seized second in the discus (115-5) and Mackenzie Griffith took third in the triple jump (35-4 1/2).

WCAL finals

Hosting last Friday’s West Catholic Athletic League championship meet didn’t prove advantageous for the St. Francis boys, who placed fourth with 57.5 points. Rival Bellarmine won the meet with 167 points.

Chris Chisam provided the Lancers with their lone first-place finish by winning the discus (173-5). He also placed third in the shot put (49-2 1/2).

Brad Libuit was the only other St. Francis athlete to place in two events, taking third in the triple jump (42-9 1/2) and fourth in the high jump (6-0).

Sean MacArthur seized second in the pole vault (14-0). A trio of Lancers placed fourth: Daniel Ferriera in the 110 hurdles (15.80), Carlos Chavez in the two-mile (9:55.8) and Nick Sheuerman in the discus (143-2).

Community college

Mountain View High’s boys 800-meter relay team made school history at last week’s SCVAL El Camino Division track and field championship meet.

With a winning time of 44.11 seconds, the relay team of Jordan Nelson, Richard Turner, Trevor Hooper and Lewis Hall established a new school record.

Mountain View also captured the long jump event, as Jonathan Lam went 20 feet, 3 inches.

The Spartans totaled 57 points at the May 1 meet, held at De Anza College, to place fifth.

Turner helped his team’s cause by taking second in both the 400 (50.83) and 200 (23.04) runs. Third-place finishers for Mountain View included Nelson in the 100 dash (11.29), Hooper in the long jump (19-8) and the mile relay team (3:33.64) of Ryan Reid, Turner, Guillermo Moreira and Adriel Rodriguez.

“In league competition this year, the boys finished off 1-5, which on paper isn’t that great,” Mountain View coach Samantha Read said. “But we have had some tremendous performances this season by our sprints crew, our distance group (and) jumps group, and our throwers are starting to come on nicely.”

On the girls’ side, Mountain View placed third at the league meet. The Spartans racked up 62 points and claimed two events.

Kathy Santoso won the triple jump with a 34-7 and Jane Doolittle grabbed the top spot in the high jump by clearing 5 feet. Dawn Maxey placed second in the triple jump (33-7 1/4) and third in both the 100 dash (13.25) and 100 hurdles (17.17). Erin McConnell finished third in the high jump (4-8).

“The girls were 4-2 this season, which is down from previous years,” Read said. “Our team is quite young, but the girls did a great job this year with their limited experience. The veterans on the team have taught them well and they will be back at the levels that they are use to.”

A pair of Los Altos grads have qualified for Saturday’s NorCal meet in Modesto.

At last weekend’s NorCal qualifier at Chabot, Pete Bjorklund won the discus (164-7) and took third in the shot put (52-5), while Steve Perry finished eighth in the 1,500 run (4:04) and ninth in the 800 (1:58).
