The Los Altos School District’s Budget Review Committee met May 2 to recommend budget cuts totaling $4.5 million.
The committee presented the list to the Board of Trustees at its regular meeting May 6, after the Town Crier went to press. The committee also presented a priority list for possible restorations. The Board of Trustees decided on the formal budget cuts at the same meeting.

Budget Review Committee members selected the proposed cuts from a list of “brainstormed” ideas for balancing the 2002 03 budget. The Budget Review Committee’s proposed cuts, estimated at $4.5 million, are as follows:
eliminate one full time clerical position at the district
eliminate district Web site
eliminate district warehouse
eliminate pupil services clerk
eliminate a quarter of a full-time equivalent in district office clerical
a 10 percent cut in district manager allocations
eliminate district nurse
eliminate elementary office clerks
eliminate encroachment of science resource specialist
eliminate one office staff member at the junior high schools
eliminate noon duty aides
reduce in-service training for teachers
reduce mini-mentor stipends
eliminate school supply budgets
eliminate Community Health Alliance Council (CHAC) contribution
eliminate four full- time custodians
eliminate one full-time maintenance position
eliminate weekend grounds program
a 40 percent cut for a junior high English Language Learner teacher
elementary English Language Learner takes voluntary reduction
eliminate administrators mileage allowance
eliminate vacation buyout for administrators
program manager carryover returns to general fund
eliminate library aides I and III
eliminate district funding to LAEF
eliminate district librarian
eliminate GATE after-school programs
eliminate class-size reduction at elementary schools
grades 7 and 8 staffed at 30 students per teacher with a five or six period day
do not open seventh elementary school
