St. Francis High gymnastics coach Lynn Horiye went into last week’s meet at Los Altos unsure if his team had enough depth to beat the undefeated Eagles.

As it turned out, the Lancers’ depth carried them to a 175.90-173.35 win April 30 in a SCVAL South Division meet.

Although Los Altos (7-1 overall) had the top two all-around finishers in juniors Emily Keenan and Ciera Kash, the Lancers (4-0) snagged spots 3-6.

Sophomore Courtney Sinclair was St. Francis’ top finisher, placing third with an all-around score of 35.50.

The Lancers captured two events: Tess Pinard finished first on the vault (8.70) and fellow senior Corinne Allen won the uneven bars (9.70).

“We were two points under our highest score so far this season (because) all of our girls added new skills to routines today,” St. Francis assistant coach Nancy Kludt said. “Our performances were aggressive but shaky, but that’s the norm when we are increasing difficulty.”

Los Altos received strong performances for all-around champ Keenan (37.20) and runner-up Kash (36.20). Keenan won the floor exercise (9.80) and took second on bars (9.60), while Kash placed first on the balance beam (9.60) and second on floor (9.60).

However, no other member of the Eagles finished among the top three in any event at the grueling six-hour meet.

“Los Altos did a great job today,” Kludt said. “They have a couple of excellent athletes, but seem to be lacking the depth that (St. Francis) is showing.”

St. Francis and Los Altos will meet again at Friday’s league meet, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Twisters Gym in Mountain View.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
