By Los Altos Senior Center open house May 16

Enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres when officials at the Los Altos Senior Center hold an open house 4-7 p.m., May 16, to celebrate facility renovations at the center.

Pet parade around the corner

The 55th annual Kiwanis Pet Parade is scheduled to begin 10 a.m., May 18, in downtown Los Altos. The parade route begins at First Street and loops around Main and State streets. Included are costumed pets and owners, school bands, Scouts and other groups. Participants are encouraged to arrive at First Street near Main no later than 9:30 a.m.

AAUW features business owners

Three local area women business owners will be the focus of the American Association of University Women dinner, 5:30 -7:30 p.m., May 16, at Garden House in Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos.

The three women featured in the program are Lee Murphy, owner of Calla Boutiques, specializing in distinctive clothing for women, with locations in Los Altos and Menlo Park; Dr. Carol Meschter, founder of Comparative Biosciences, a biomedical services company in Mountain View; and Sharon Shipley, proprietress of Mon Cheri Cooking School & Catering. She also teaches cooking classes through Foothill and De Anza Colleges Community Education.

Dinner will be catered by Mon Cheri Cooking School. Reservations are $15 per person. and must be made by May 10. For reservations or information, call 941-8353.

Museum’s home, garden tour sold out

Tickets for the Los Altos History Museum’s first ever Spring Home and Garden Tour, scheduled for this Saturday, have been sold out.

This year’s tour showcases six homes, including a grand estate, a mini-French chateau and a Craftsman-style bungalow, in the historic village neighborhood surrounding Orange and University avenues in Los Altos.

In addition, the museum will hold an exhibit of the history of this first Los Altos neighborhood.

The homes open for the tour are on University and Orange avenues, and Burke Road.

Northern Trust, opening an office on Second Street this month, is sponsoring the tour. All proceeds benefit the museum.

Community Service Award recipient named

Bob Adams of Los Altos has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Los Altos-Mountain View District of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors’ Community Service Award.

The public is invited to a special luncheon honoring Adams 11:30 a.m., May 16, at Michael’s at Shoreline Restaurant next to the Shoreline Golf Course in Mountain View.

The Silicon Valley Association of Realtors is a 3,000-member real estate trade association and homeowner advocacy group serving the south Peninsula.

St. Joseph festival

The 16th annual St. Joseph Parish Festival is scheduled for May 17-19 at 1120 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View. There will be carnival rides, an international blend of food, and a variety of entertainment for all ages.

Headlining this year’s festival will be Dr. Loco and his band.

Mtn. View yard sale scheduled for Saturday

The 7th Annual Mountain View Community Yard Sale will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, in Rengstorff Park, 201 Rengstorff Ave.

This event will coincide with the new City-Wide Garage Sale for Mountain View residents who wish to sell items from their front yards or driveways, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

citynews/garagesale.htm, and will also be available at all 7-Eleven stores and Dana Street Roasting Company, Red Rock Coffee Company and Starbucks locations in Mountain View.

Palo Alto SIR chapter turns 40

Palo Alto Branch No. 5 of the Sons In Retirement recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the chapter, which was chartered in March 1962.

Branch No. 5 meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Palo Alto Elks Club for lunch, followed by a speaker on a subject of topical interest and entertainment.

Activities available to SIR members are golf, bridge, computers, bowling, tennis, dominoes and fishing. Also offered are many group travel opportunities in the United States as well as overseas.

SIR is a non-profit corporation for retired men, devoted to the promotion and dignity of retirement.

Membership is open to all men, regardless of age, who are mainly retired. Interested applicants may call Stan Kuzul at 565-9101.

Western Horticultura Society meeting

The Western Horticultural Society welcomes garden historian Phoebe Cutler, speaking on “The Italian Garden in California and Beyond,” 7:30 p.m., today, at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.

Doors open at 7 p.m. The event is free and visitors are welcome. There will also be a plant discussion and raffle. For more information, call 493-3537.

LAH Historical Society presents Angel Island

The Los Altos Hills Historical Society has scheduled award-winning artist Flo Oy Wong, 3 p.m., Sunday, at the Los Altos Hills Town Hall, 26379 Fremont Road. Wong will present her collection of works titled, “made in usa: Angel Island Shhh.”

She premiered this at the Angel Island Immigration Station in 2000 and will show it at Ellis Island in March 2003. A visual storyteller, Wong will tell the extraordinary stories of ordinary people.

Wong’s parents were two of the many immigrants who endured the interrogation at Angel Island necessitated by the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Law.

She also will discuss and show “Kindred Spirit,” the story of Dr. Wen Ho Lee’s 278-day imprisonment and subsequent release.

Rotary art show scheduled May 18, 19

The Los Altos Rotary 27th annual Art Show, featuring 200 selected artists, is scheduled 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., May 18 and 19, at Lincoln Park in Los Altos, between Edith Avenue and Main Street.

Gallery 9 schedules Kasle monotypes

Gallery 9 has scheduled the exhibit “Another Place, Another Time,” monotypes by Maida Kasle of Menlo Park, through May 25.

Kasle reflects her interest in people in her painting and printmaking. Most of her people come from the glamorous and not-so-glamorous past, and are able to evoke pathos as well as humor.

The public is invited to a reception for the artist 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Gallery 9, 143 Main St., Los Altos.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
