The American Red Cross is working toward teaching children how to respond in a disaster or emergency situation. Its program “Kid Power” is specially designed to teach children in third, fourth and fifth grades how to prevent and respond to emergencies.
The program is scheduled 1:30-4:30 p.m., Saturday, at the American Red Cross office, 400 Mitchell Lane, Palo Alto.
The program will highlight home-alone safety, the Heimlich maneuver, rescue breathing, bandaging and fire safety.
“Prevention is the key to reducing the risk of injury,” said Rosanna Bonfilio, youth education specialist at the Palo Alto Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
“At this age, children begin to participate in activities with limited adult supervision; they start to spend more time away from home,” Bonfilio said.
“By emphasizing prevention, the program helps children recognize potentially dangerous situations and learn to respond in an appropriate manner,” Bonfilio added.
Preregistration is required. To preregister for the program or for more information, call 688-0427 or e-mail rbonfilio@paarc.org.
