By Police department names new captain
Los Altos Police Sgt. Bob Lacey was named captain April 14 after an extensive recruitment process. He fills the vacancy left by Cliff Balch who retired last year.

He was a deputy with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department before coming to Los Altos in 1980.
Lacey grew up in the Los Altos area and attended St. Francis High School. His parents still reside in Los Altos.
Lacey lives in Cupertino with his wife, Linda. They have two sons.
He is scheduled to be sworn in as captain this week.

De Anza bomber found guilty
Los Altos
A judge found Al Joseph DeGuzman, 20, guilty of plotting a massacre at De Anza College in January 2001, where he was a student.
DeGuzman was found guilty last Friday of 108 felony charges for possessing homemade pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails.
DeGuzman faces anywhere from three to 100 years in prison.
Police arrested DeGuzman Jan. 29, 2001, just hours before he allegedly planned to execute a detailed plan that included bombing the Cupertino campus. Police found 60 bombs, weapons, ammunition and a diagram and timeline for an attack.
Michelle Houde, one of the two photo clerks credited for tipping off police to the possible bombing, was scheduled last Monday to debut a public service announcement, “Speak Up,” encouraging young people and adults to act to save lives.
