Track & Field

Saratoga swept Mountain View Thursday in the final SCVAL El Camino Division dual meet of the season for both teams. The Spartan boys fell 82-44 and the girls lost 75-52.

“Saratoga is a very good team and they ran away with the meet in all divisions,” said Mountain View coach Samantha Read. “We had a few of our athletes post some big (personal records) and season-best marks, which is great leading up to the league (meet).”

For the girls, Christin Renner set a new personal record in the mile, cutting 15 seconds off her previous best to place second with a time of 5 minutes, 49 seconds. Dawn Maxey ran a season-best in the 100-meter hurdles (16.9) to notch second place.

Winning events for the Spartan girls were Erin McConnell in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), Alison Kiesciewski in the long jump (14-2), Kathy Santoso in the triple jump (34-2) and the mile relay team (4:47.4).

For the boys, Mark Taylor topped his previous best in the shot put by 4 1/2 feet, throwing 40-8 to take third. J.D. Nelson improved upon his previous best in the long jump by nine inches, winning with a 20-6.

Nelson also ran on the Spartans’ triumphant 400 relay team (44.5). Richard Turner ran on that relay team as well, plus the winning mile relay (3:40.31). Individually, he won the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.1).

In a De Anza Division meet Thursday, the St. Francis girls beat Los Altos 77-48.

Los Altos was led by Allie Miller, who won the 100 hurdles (16.5), 300 hurdles (49.2) and high jump (4-10). Laura Perry captured the 800 (2:31), while Andrea Cummings won the long jump (16-1).

The Eagles’ mile relay team of Merissa Periana, Amanda Rajapaksa, Perry and Danielle Marcoux also came out on top, posting a time of 4:25.

Badminton

Three proved to be a lucky number for Los Altos High softball pitcher Chrissy Sommer last Friday vs. Milpitas.

The senior threw a three-hitter and belted a three-run homer to lead Los Altos (5-4, 12-10) to a 4-1 SCVAL De Anza Division win.

Sommer’s home run came in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the game tied at 1.

Mountain View sunk to 6-6 in the SCVAL last week by losing matches to Monta Vista and Lynbrook.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
