By Therapy Sisters to perform Saturday

The Therapy Sisters are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, to benefit the Global Fund for Women.

Known for their hilarious antics and off-the-wall song lyrics, these Austin-based divas of dysfunction demonstrate that music and laughter really are the best medicine.

The concert is sponsored by Harrell Remodeling. Half the proceeds will go to GFW to support grants for women’s human rights organizations around the world.

The concert will be at the Harrell Remodeling office, 1954 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View.

Chefs Who Care at Vive Sol

The Chefs Who Care benefit dinner will be held Monday at Vive Sol restaurant, 2020 West El Camino Real, between Escuela and Rengstorff avenues, in Mountain View. Seatings will be at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be a choice of three entrees plus soup and salad.

The prepaid deadline is tomorrow. Prepaid cost is $20 adults, $10 children (ages 6-12). Cost at the door is $22 adults, $12 children.

Chefs Who Care is a program that supports the Community Services Agency.

Business owners at AAUW dinner

Three local area women business owners will be the focus of the American Association of University Women dinner, 5:30-7:30 p.m., May 16, at Garden House in Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos.

The three women featured in the program are Lee Murphy, owner of Calla Boutiques in Los Altos and Menlo Park; Dr. Carol Meschter, founder of Comparative Biosciences in Mountain View; and Sharon Shipley, proprietress of Mon Cheri Cooking School & Catering.

Mon Cheri Cooking School will cater the dinner. Reservations are $15 per person. and must be made by May 10. For reservations or information, call 941-8353.

Mtn. View yard sale scheduled for May 11

The 7th Annual Mountain View Community Yard Sale will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 11, in Rengstorff Park, 201 Rengstorff Ave.

This event will coincide with the new City-Wide Garage Sale for Mountain View residents who wish to sell items from their front yards or driveways, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participating addresses will be listed in the May 10 issue of the Mountain View Voice and on the city’s Web site at www.ci.mtnview.ca.us/citynews/garagesale.htm, and will also be available at 7-Eleven stores, Dana Street Roasting Company, Red Rock Coffee Company and Starbucks locations in Mountain View.

Rummage sale around the bend

Foothills Congregational Church has scheduled its annual rummage sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, on the church grounds, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos.

In addition to the usual items for sale, the Foothills event features a “Designer Room,” which offers an array of name labels and designer clothes for women at a fraction of the original cost.

Other items include books, linens, housewares, toys, children’s clothing, sports equipment, small furniture and outdoor equipment.

Western Horticultural Society meeting

The Western Horticultural Society welcomes garden historian Phoebe Cutler, speaking on “The Italian Garden in California and Beyond,” 7:30 p.m., May 8, at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.

Doors open at 7 p.m. The event is free and visitors are welcome.

There will also be a plant discussion and raffle.

Movie palace developer to address women’s club

The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos has scheduled its luncheon today at Michael’s at Shoreline Restaurant, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.

The business meeting begins at 11 a.m., followed by the luncheon and program.

The speaker will be Arthur Adams Jr., who has had a long interest in movie palaces - his father, Arthur F. Adams Sr., was head of design for a firm of architects in Chicago and New York during the 1920s, the peak of movie palace development.

He will show illustrations and tell stories of some of the great movie palaces of the past, such as the New York and Brooklyn Paramounts, and the Uptown, Palace and Oriental in Chicago. Guests are welcome.

Friends of Library used book sale

The Friends of the Los Altos Library has scheduled a used book sale Friday through Sunday at the Hillview Community Center in Los Altos.

Hours are: Friday, 7-9 p.m., for members only; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. (by the bag).

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
