Registration for AYSO Region 43’s fall soccer season is scheduled for next month at Santa Rita School in Los Altos. Times: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 11 and 19; and 7-9 p.m., May 15. Region 43 is for boys and girls, kindergarten to high school, who live in north Los Altos, north Mountain View or south Palo Alto. The league also needs volunteer coaches, referees and team coordinators (no experience necessary; training provided). For more information, logon to www.AYSO43.org.

Play ball

Sign-ups for Mountain View Babe Ruth Seniors are set for noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, at McKelvey Ballpark on Miramonte Avenue, one block west of El Camino Real in Mountain View. The baseball league is for players ages 16-18. Games begin after the high school season ends and run through July. For more information, call 966-8027.

Get in the game

The Jewish Community Center, 655 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto, offers three three-on-three, half-court basketball leagues. Bring your own team or be placed on one. The 18-plus league plays Thursday nights; 35-and-up plays 4:30-7 p.m., Sundays; and 45-and-up league plays 7-9 p.m., Tuesdays. Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
