The third Annual Run for Zimbabwe Orphans was a winning success. A total of 243 adults and children participated in the April 14 race at St. Joseph School in Mountain View, raising $9,800, said race director Ellen Clark.

The funds raised will go to the Makumbi Children’s Home in Zimbabwe. Since donations are conducted by electronic transfer, donations can still be made until May 31.

Make checks out to St. Joseph, writing “Zimbabwe Orphans” on the check. Send donations to: Ellen Clark, 156 Marvin Ave., Los Altos, CA 94022.

Winners of the championship cups are as follows:

Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten half-mile:

First place: Samia Adam and Tate Johnson.

Second place: Sabrina Stephens and Ryan Maia.

Third place: Moira Saxena and Nicholas Cuevas.

First and second grade one mile:

First place: Shannon Sparks and Jack Bordoni.

Second place: Laila Smith and Charley Clarke.

Third place: Alia Casino and Michael Augustine.

Third and fourth grade one mile:

First place: Joanna Maltbaek and Ismail Adam.

Second place: Katherine Constantine and Taylor Moran.

Third place: Megan Unger and Riley Moran.

Fifth and sixth grade one mile:

First place: Michelle Sparks and Tariq Adam.

Second place: Petra Barton and Mason Sinclair.

Third place: Elizabeth Schurz and Robbie Carney.

Seventh and eighth grade one mile:

First place: Hilary May and Joey Horiuchi.

Second place:Cassie Camilleri and Matt Grimes.

Third place: Amina Ahman and Kevin Murphy.

High school and adult one mile:

First place: Danielle Zelinski and Steve Parry.

Second place: Sandy Luong and Kevin Chaves.

Third place: Kelly Emo and Jared Boggs.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
