The Garden Club of Los Altos in conjunction with the Los Altos Recreation Department is holding a plant exchange 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, in the Hillview Community Center parking lot, 97 Hillview Ave. Visitors can bring extra plants, seedlings, cuttings, bulbs, seeds and small shrubs and trees and take home something new in exchange.

Rummage sale around the bend
Foothills Congregational Church has scheduled its annual rummage sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 3 and 4, on the church grounds, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos.
In addition to the usual items, the Foothills event features a “Designer Room,” which offers an array of name labels and designer clothes for women at a fraction of the original cost.
Other items include books, linens, housewares, toys, children’s clothing, sports equipment, small furniture and outdoor equipment.
Western Horticultural Society meeting
The Western Horticultural Society has scheduled garden historian Phoebe Cutler, speaking on “The Italian Garden in California and Beyond,” 7:30 p.m., May 8, at Loyola School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.

Technology and Society luncheon
The Technology and Society Committee’s biweekly luncheon is scheduled 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, at the Golden Wok Restaurant, 895 Villa St., Mountain View. Julie Phillips, coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program and instructor in biological sciences at De Anza College, will discuss “Building for the Future: The Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies” and the importance of making sustainable building the standard within every community.

LAH Historical Society presents Angel Island The Los Altos Hills Historical Society has scheduled award-winning artist Flo Oy Wong, 3 p.m., May 12, at the Los Altos Town Hall, 26379 Fremont Road. Wong will present her “made in usa: Angel Island Shhh.” She premiered this at the Angel Island Immigration Station in 2000 and will show it at Ellis Island in March 2003. A visual storyteller, Wong will tell the extraordinary stories of ordinary people. Wong’s parents were two of the many immigrants who endured the interrogation at Angel Island required by the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Law.
She also will discuss and show “Kindred Spirit,” the story of Dr. Wen Ho Lee’s 278-day imprisonment and subsequent release.
Friends of Library used book sale
The Friends of the Los Altos Library will hold a used book sale May 3-5 at the Hillview Community Center. Hours are: 7-9 p.m., Friday, for members only; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, (by the bag).

Rotary art show scheduled for May
The Los Altos Rotary 27th Annual Art Show, featuring 200 selected artists, is scheduled 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., May 18 and 19, at Lincoln Park in Los Altos, between Edith Avenue and Main Street.

Main Street Gallery showcases Kinkaide
The Thomas Kinkaide Master Highlighter Event is scheduled 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at the Los Altos Main Street Gallery.
Kinkaide’s canvases seem lifelike as the artisan adds dimension through hand-highlighting with oil paint, making each piece a unique work of art. Kinkaide has received numerous awards for his works. Most recently, the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers named Kincaide Graphic Artist of the Year for the fourth consecutive year.

Glenn auctioneer for MADD fund-raiser
MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, has scheduled its first fund-raising auction, 6- 9 p.m., Saturday, at Los Altos Lutheran Church, 460 S. El Monte Ave. Sports anchor Vernon Glenn, of KRON-TV Channel 4, will be guest auctioneer.
Proceeds will help Bay Area victims, increase public awareness and provide education about drunk driving and its effects.

El Camino Youth Symphony gala
The El Camino Youth Symphony will honor their benefactors and welcome new donors at the second annual Benefactor’s Gala, scheduled 1-3 p.m., Sunday, at the Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto.
The afternoon festivities will include wine and hors d’oeuvres, and will feature the ECYS String Quartet and the ECYS faculty in duet performances with their students.

Nakamatsu featured in benefit concert
A benefit concert featuring renowned pianist and Foothill College alumnus Jon Nakamatsu, will be presented 3:30 p.m., June 23, in Smithwick Theater, Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.
Nakamatsu became the first American in 16 years to win gold at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997.
He was rewarded with a two-year tour of the world, receiving rave reviews throughout the United States and Europe.
The concert proceeds will benefit the Foothill College fine arts programs.
