Spring Sports Summary

Los Altos High’s winning streak in boys tennis is over at seven matches.

The Eagles dropped a 6-1 decision to league leader Monta Vista last Thursday at Memorial Park in Cupertino.

Los Altos’ lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Jon Wong beat Bastian Bartels 6-4, 7-5.

“We were missing two starters,” said Los Altos coach Cuong Duong, who played without Mike Sherbakov and Mark Schopmeyer. “If those two were there, we would have won.”

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 7-4 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 11-5 overall.

Earlier in the week, Los Altos topped visiting Lynbrook 5-2.

Mountain View picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 decision at Milpitas April 9.

The victory put the Spartans’ record at 1-10 in the SCVAL El Camino Division.

St. Francis won the Palo Alto Tennis Tournament Saturday, thanks to its 4-0 record in the round-robin event.

Swimming & Diving

The Mountain View girls extended their home winning streak to 16 meets with a 132-57 rout of Milpitas April 10.

The SCVAL El Camino Division-leading Spartans (5-0) were paced by standouts Kelly Blakemore, Brook Bishop and Laurie Gregg, plus newcomer Erica Lau, who all won events. Jessica Howard-Anderson contributed to the cause by finishing second in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and was part of the winning 200 and 400 free relays.

The Mountain View boys remained in contention for a division title as well, beating Milpitas 124-60. The Spartans (4-1) won every event.

Freshman Fred Tran and junior Mike Kasper led the way: Tran won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke; Kasper prevailed in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Robert Gregg and Chris Prochnow continued their trend of switching off dominating the distance events, with Prochnow winning the 200 free and Gregg capturing the 500 free. Other winners included freshman Tyler Landrith in the 50 free, junior Chris Malatesta in the 100 free and senior Jesse Cirimele in diving.

The Spartans conclude their dual-meet season April 25 with a 3 p.m. contest at Cupertino. The meet will be a showdown for first place on the boys’ side.

“Cupertino is the three-time league champ,” Spartans coach Ben Murray said, “and MV wants to take the title away.”

Gymnastics

Los Altos preserved its perfect record Thursday by beating Aragon, Hillsdale and Sequoia in a non-league home meet.

The Eagles (5-0) tallied a score of 174.4; Hillsdale was second with a 117.7.

Los Altos junior Ciera Kash won the all-around title.

St. Francis opened its season with a 171.75-160.75 win at San Mateo April 9. Lancer sophomore Courtney Sinclair won the all-around title (36.350).

Badminton

A 37-34 home loss to Homestead April 9 mathematically eliminated Mountain View from the SCVAL championship race.

As a result, coach Kelly Kuboyama said he will change his approach for the Spartans’ three remaining league matches.

“Now I’m going to concentrate more on individual players and getting them ready for the SCVAL tournament,” Kuboyama said.

Mountain View (6-4) has several players expected to go far in the league tourney, including top boys singles player Anh Vo and the No. 1 boys doubles team of Dhiren Mistry and Brian Chiu.

Vo took Homestead’s Wesley Hsieh, considered one of the league’s best players, to five games before losing last week. Mistry-Chiu are undefeated this season (10-0).

Los Altos won both its matches last week to up its SCVAL record to 3-8. The Eagles followed a 41-31 win at Wilcox April 10 with a 42-26 home victory over Santa Clara Thursday.

Los Altos swept Santa Clara in girls singles and mixed doubles to earn a total of 24 points. Winners in girls singles included Michelle Ha and Valerie Sun.
