Stanford University freshman Adam Peterson of Los Altos finished 23rd in the platform diving event March 30 at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga.

Peterson posted a score of 391.40, helping the Stanford swim team place second overall in the NCAA finals. The University of Texas beat out the Cardinal for the championship, 512-501.

Peterson, a graduate of St. Francis High, became the first male diver from Stanford to qualify for the NCAA finals since 1996. Stanford also sent 16 swimmers to the meet.

Peterson qualified for the NCAA finals by finishing among the top three divers at the Zone E Championships in mid-March.

While at St. Francis, Peterson won an unprecedented three Central Coast Section diving titles and finished second in the event as a freshman.

A 90-minute tape-delayed broadcast of last month’s NCAA championships is scheduled to be televised by ESPN2 at 2 p.m., April 29.
