By Astronomy lecture at Foothill College

Dr. Debra Fischer from the University of California at Berkeley, has scheduled a nontechnical illustrated lecture on the search for systems of planets around other stars, 7-8:30 p.m., today, in Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Admission is free. Visitors must purchase a parking pass for $2. For more information, call 949-7888.

Zimbabwe orphan run fund-raiser

The third annual “Run for Zimbabwe Orphans” has been scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, at St. Joseph School, 1120 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View. Registration is $5 per runner and is open from kindergartners to adults. All proceeds go to the Makumbi Children’s Home in Zimbabwe. Runners may register from 11:30 a.m. to 20 minutes before their race.

Foothill College flea market benefit

Foothill College has scheduled its monthly flea market 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 20, in parking lot 7 at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Proceeds will benefit the Foothill Music Theater. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. A wide variety of items will be for sale.

Visitors must purchase a parking pass for $2. Vendor space is available.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
