Last Friday’s swim meet at Santa Clara proved to be business as usual for the Mountain View High girls and a bounce-back effort for the Spartan boys.

The Mountain View girls routed the Bruins 134-46 to improve to 4-0 in the SCVAL El Camino Division. The boys - who suffered what Spartans coach Ben Murray called “a heart-breaking loss” to Saratoga the week before - rebounded with a 112-47 victory that upped their division record to 3-1.

The boys made up for the absences of three swimmers out sick with strong performances by several competitors, led by Mike Kasper. The junior won the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 4.08 seconds (the fifth-best time in the Central Coast Section) and anchored the victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Senior Chris Prochnow took top honors in the 200 free, with freshman Robert Gregg second; the two reserved finishing order in the 500 free. Freshman Fred Tran remained unbeaten in the 100 backstroke and senior Jesse Cirimele won the diving event to go to 4-0 in league.

The girls sank Santa Clara with their high-scoring trio of Kelly Blakemore, Brooke Bishop and Laurie Gregg, who combined to finish one-two in every event they competed in and also led the 200 medley and 400 free relays to victory.

All of the Mountain View relays have garnered top-10 times in the CCS.

Sophomore Bishop leads the section in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly and 100 back. She is second in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 IM.

Also making key contributions Friday: sophomore Jessica Howard-Anderson, who won the 200 free; freshman Erica Lau, who won the 500 free in a CCS-qualifying time; and divers Sonia Manchaves and Kristen Meier, who finished one-two.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
