A special election is scheduled for Tuesday, for voters in the Los Altos School District to decide on an increase in the parcel tax from $264 a year to $597 per year, beginning July 1, on land parcels within the district. The district includes most of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, and parts of Mountain View and Palo Alto.

There is, however, a senior exemption.

Who is eligible for the exemption?

If you own a parcel within the Los Altos School District boundaries, are at least 65 years of age, and the parcel is your principal residence, you are eligible.

How do I file for an exemption?

To be exempt from the parcel tax, a “Request for Exemption” form must be filed with the Los Altos School District. It is available in person at the district office. If you are unable to come to the district office, please call to make arrangements.

What to bring with you to the district office

(copies are acceptable)

1. Your tax bill for the current tax year from the Santa Clara County Tax Collector’s Office

2. Proof of birth date: birth certificate, passport, driver’s license or Medicare card

What do I do next year?

The request for exemption needs to be renewed every year. Each spring the school district will mail a renewal form to your residence. Sign and return the form by mail or in person to the address printed on the form, and you will be automatically exempt from the parcel tax for another year.

For questions on your property tax, call the Santa Clara County Tax Collector’s Office at (408) 299-2241.

For more information on the Senior Parcel Tax Exemption, call the Los Altos School District Office at 941-4010.

The district office is located at 360 S. San Antonio Road, Suite 15. The cross street is Whitney.
