Spring Sports Summary

Baseball

Starter Tristan Shuman pitched a three-hitter last Thursday in Mountain View’s 11-1 rout of host Lynbrook in SCVAL El Camino Division action. Brian Frassetti and Matt Means each drove in three runs and had a pair of hits for the Spartans (5-2, 10-4).

In a non-league battle between two of the Central Coast Section’s better teams, St. Francis edged Gunn 2-0 Thursday at Baylands. Starter Alex Perkins improved to 4-0 with the win and limited Gunn (9-3) to just three hits. Mike Ribero had two hits for St. Francis (14-2).

Mitty clipped Homestead 8-7 Friday in the title game of the Cupertino Lyon’s Tournament. Brad McGhee belted two triples for the Mustangs (8-6) and his brother Brian had three hits.

Softball

St. Francis beat Los Altos 4-3 March 27, as Kristine Crawford scored the winning run by stealing home on a passed ball in the seventh inning.

Crawford had three hits in the De Anza Division game and teammate Alex Anunciacion drove in a pair of runs. Jenna Barrango earned the win for St. Francis (4-0, 5-3); Alyce Jorgensen took the loss for Los Altos (2-1, 6-3).

Mountain View starter Alyssa Robbins allowed only three hits Friday at Los Gatos, but her team still lost 3-0. The Spartans (1-3, 8-6) failed to get a hit in the De Anza Division contest.

Boys Tennis

Los Altos last week avenged early-season losses to Palo Alto and Saratoga to move up the De Anza Division standings. The Eagles won both matches 4-3, pushing their record to 7-4.

“Saratoga beat us 5-2 earlier in the year,” Los Altos coach Cuong Duong said, “so that was a great win, actually.”

St. Francis improved to 7-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League March 27 by routing host St. Ignatius 6-1. Top player Eric Chow cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win for the Lancers (7-0, 9-1).

Badminton

The swim season has hit the halfway point, and Los Altos High coach Dan Dye has no complaints about the way his boys and girls teams have competed thus far.

“They’re performing very well,” he said. “We’re right at midseason and they’re tired, but they’re still training and improving their times. It’s encouraging for the league meet.”

Both Los Altos teams enter today’s 3 p.m. home meet vs. Gunn with identical 3-1 marks in the SCVAL De Anza Division.

The Eagles swept visiting Lynbrook last Thursday, with the boys winning 94-89 and the girls prevailing 115-65.

Winners for the boys included Chris Kelsch in the 200 freestyle (1:54.47), Brian Whitlock in the 500 free (5:16.25), Andy Wiener in the 100 back stroke (1:00.29), the 200 free relay team (1:33.61) and Doug Hansen in 1-meter dive (218.65).

Led by double-winners Courtney Beyer and Tina Tkalcevic, the Los Altos girls captured 11 events. Beyer claimed the 200 free (2:03.94) and 100 butterfly (28.32), while Tkalcevic prevailed in the 200 individual medley (2:19.65) and 100 breast stroke (1:14.94).

Los Altos picked up its first SCVAL win last week, beating Los Gatos 52-12 March 26. The Eagles then lost 39-31 to Cupertino Thursday to go to 1-6.

Mountain View dropped a pair of matches last week to fall to 4-3 in the SCVAL. The Spartans lost 47-26 to Milpitas and 50-18 to Palo Alto.
