Bob Anderson of Los Altos placed ninth in the men’s division of the Fifty-Plus Fitness Association 8-Kilometer Road Race, held March 17 at Stanford University. Anderson, 54, ran the race in 29 minutes, 35 seconds.

Getting ship-shape

Flotilla 43 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a six-week Advanced Coastal Navigation class at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela St. Classes run 7-9 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, starting next week. The course, for experienced power and sail boaters, covers basic navigation, compass, nautical charts, navigation tools, dead reckoning, piloting, current sailing, tides and currents, electronic-navigation, references and fuel and voyage planning. Get your kicks

The Mountain View-Los Altos Strikers, an under-12 CYSA Class I boys soccer team (for players born after Aug. 1, 1989), is holding goalie tryouts for the spring and fall seasons. For more information, call coach Simon Weiss at 743-5857. An under-12 boys CYSA Division I and III team holds tryouts 3-5 p.m., April 7, at St. Nicholas School in Los Altos Hills. Adult athletics

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
