Business Profile

Pet’s Delight: the store name says it all. It carries products for the daily care, cleaning, health and behavior training of your pet.

The Afnani brothers, Mike and Sam, opened Pet’s Delight in downtown Los Altos this week. They chose Los Altos because statistics show there are more licensed pets in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills than in other area communities.

“We have friends in the pet business who say it’s a coming business,” Mike said. “We looked at other cities and decided on Los Altos or Saratoga and came here because there are a higher number of pet owners.”

He added, “We are a specialized store. We don’t compete with the mass marketers, but we offer upper-medium and premium pet foods that consist of holistic as well as natural foods. Customers will find our prices very reasonable.”

Pet’s Delight carries all sorts of treats and products for small, adult and senior pets. It carries foods that cater to animals with special needs and those with sensitive digestive systems.

The store has a wide variety of toys that are given to pets to reduce stress. “When pets are left alone or separated from their owner, you give them a toy,” Sam said. “Our exclusive selection of exciting, unique toys for cats, dogs, birds and other small animals will stimulate their minds as well as keep them occupied.”

Scattered in the pet toy section are Look Who’s Talking - stuffed animals that make a noise, which dogs love to carry in their mouth for attention. Also in the toy section are Booda squishes that squeak.

The Afnani brothers carry numerous cage accessories and other innovative products to induce sleep or encourage play in the cage or in the house.

The store aisles have products categorized according to use. High on the shelves are different sizes of bedding for animals and various brands of cat litter. Along the wall is a long line of leashes, including training leashes, for all kinds of animals.

“Not all pets are clean. Some are dirty, so we carry cleaning supplies for carpets and dens,” Mike said.

Some of the exclusive product lines carried by Pet’s Delight are INNOVA, California Natural, Sensible Choice, Neutro, Solid Gold and WYSONG. The store currently has opening specials on pet food and merchandise.

“We want input from our customers. We know pet supplies is a business that caters to customers’ whims,” Mike said. “We are prepared for that and need customer input on what to carry.”

On the front door is a “help wanted” sign.

Pet’s Delight is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday.

Pet’s Delight is located at 390 State St., Los Altos. For more information, call 948-0501.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
