By CHUMS thanks for spreading the word
CHUMS (Children United Morally and Spiritually) would like to thank the people of Los Altos and the surrounding communities for supporting our cause and helping us reach our goal. We sold 5,000 cards and raised $3,000 with your help.
The money will be donated to the 9/11 Fund and AmericaĆs Fund for Afghan Children. We are very proud to show what kids of different faiths can do when they work together.
We had support from many businesses in town but very special thanks are due to Draeger’s, Kinko’s, Linden Tree, Los Altos Rotary, and the Los Altos Town Crier.
Without their help, we could not have been this successful in communicating our message and reaching our goal.

Agrees action was unnecessary
We are writing to express to express our support for the views expressed in the letter to the editor on closing of the Los Altos Bar & Grill in your December 12th issue.
We are forty-something parents who decided to walk our dog into town at about 11 that night (for the record, both our kids had sleepovers that night). It was the night before Thanksgiving and we were in a good mood.
Much to our surprise, there was a large crowd outside the front and back entrances to LABAG. Far from being troubled, however, we enjoyed the atmosphere.
The crowd was very well behaved and there was ample security present. Indeed, the scene brought back nostalgia of our own returns from college for the first vacation of the school year and catching up with our high school buddies.
The scene only further enhanced our love affair with Los Altos. We viewed it as yet another plus that there was at least one safe place in town where kids could go when they wanted to have a drink and hang out with friends. We envisioned that one day our kids would probably be there (and even took a little comfort that they could walk home). In addition, you only had to walk a block in any direction to return to the typical quiet Los Altos night.
In any event, to the extent the police action was meant to protect pedestrians like ourselves, it was quite unnecessary and unfortunate.
As evidenced by the letter to the editor, the town and its community spirit have been ever so slightly damaged.
Have you heard of “random acts of kindness”. Well, this was a random act of meanness. We echo the call for those in city hall to look into this matter.
If the City Council wants to regulate this activity, and even require a permit in advance, fine. But there is no reason why our town should not accommodate the peaceful holiday cheer we witnessed that night.
