By City invites residents to re-name Shoup Park picnic area

Town Crier Staff Report

The city of Los Altos is inviting residents to participate in the naming of a Shoup Park picnic area to commemorate Sept. 11 events and those who have given their lives in the Afghan conflict.

The city’s Parks, Arts & Recreation Commission, which agreed to coordinate the effort last week, also wants the name to reflect hope for the future.

“We want the focus on our great nation,” said David Brees, parks and recreation director.

The re-naming of the Shoup picnic area comes after the city considered, then ultimately rejected the idea of re-naming Conner Park at the corner of Edith Avenue and San Antonio Road.

The area to be re-named is located behind the Garden House at the back end of the park, located on University Avenue.

Under city guidelines, the name must have the word “area” in it, but the rest is up to residents’ inspiration and imagination.

The commission wants the names accompanied by a brief statement explaining why that name should be selected.

Entries are due Jan. 11, the four-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks. They must include the name and address of the proposer.

No anonymous submittals will be accepted. There is a limit of two names per person.

The commission will screen all entrees and forward three proposed names to the city council for the final decision.

Submit proposed names to the Los Altos Recreation Department, 97 Hillview Ave. 94022. For more information, call 941-0950.
