Former Los Altos resident Chuck Thompson was inducted into the University of California at Berkeley Hall of Fame during the school’s annual Hall of Fame banquet last month. Thompson and the seven other inductees were also honored at halftime of the Nov. 3 Cal-Arizona football game. Thompson, who graduated from Cal in 1950, was a standout gymnast. The Campbell resident was the NCAA tumbling champion in both 1948 and ‘49. He also placed first in the U.S. National AAU tumbling competition in 1947.

Lessons for Los Altos

In an effort to raise money for the Los Altos High girls softball team’s April trip to Anaheim, coach Bernie Quintero is giving fast-pitch softball pitching lessons and clinics. For more information, call Quintero at 965-8153.

“Medical Aspects of Health and Fitness: Dealing with Injuries” is the topic of this month’s Fifty-Plus Fitness Association’s monthly discussion, slated for 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Page Mill YMCA, 755 Page Mill Road, Building B, Palo Alto. Discussions are free. Information: 323-6160.

Play ball

Mountain View Little League, which provides T-ball and baseball opportunities for ages 5-12, have set the following in-person registration dates: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 5; 7-9 p.m., Jan. 9; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 12. Registration is held at Rengstorff Community Center. Those who sign up prior to Dec. 31 will receive an “early bird” discount. Information: 961-2065.

Play Ball, part II

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
