Ardis Egan Jr. High School has scheduled its Holiday Faire 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, in the multipurpose room at Egan. All gifts, crafts and food items have been created by Egan students. Proceeds benefit Egan’s students and library. Egan is located at 100 W. Portola Ave. For more information, call 941-6174.

Foothill College holiday concert

Foothill College’s Women’s Chorus will present “Ice & Fire: Within the Circles of Light,” a showcase of music from Arctic lands. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m., Saturday, and 4 p.m., Sunday, at St. Patrick Seminary, 320 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park. Tickets are $18 and $15 for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance through the Stanford Ticket Office, 725-ARTS.

Winter concert by MVHS

The Mountain View High School Music Department has scheduled an evening of music 7:30 p.m., Dec. 22, at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. The program features the school’s symphonic band, jazz ensemble, wind ensemble and string orchestra. Tickets are $7 and $5 at the door. For more information, call 903-6000.

Committee seeks new members

The local Special Education Advisory Committee (SELPA 1CAC) is looking for new members interested in making a difference in the special education community in our public schools. The group of parents and administrators work on a wide range of issues related to special education. Meetings are held 9-11 a.m., the first Monday of each month. Six week parenting class

Parents with children of all ages are invited to attend a six-week video and discussion course, “Making children mind … without losing yours!” Dr. Kevin Leman, parenting expert, author of 21 books and host of TV’s RealFamilies.com, is featured in the video series. The class is split between the video and discussion time with Ken Gammons, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View.

The classes are scheduled 6-7:30 p.m., Saturdays, Jan. 12 through Feb. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View, 1667 Miramonte Ave.

The cost is $10 per couple including baby-sitting, a workbook and refreshments.

Egan Jr. High Tour Days

Ardis Egan Jr. High School will offer campus tours during “Tour Days,” 9:30-10:30 a.m., Jan. 30, and 1:30-2:30 p.m., Jan. 31. Parents of students currently in the sixth grade or new students are encouraged to attend. The tour offers an opportunity to see the campus, observe classroom activities and ask pertinent questions. Visitors are asked to check in at the library, where tours will begin. The principal will greet visitors, explain the program, take guests on a walking tour of the campus and visit classes in session.

The tour will also be offered 9:30-10:20 a.m., March 27 and 1:30-2:30 p.m., March 28. Egan is located at 100 W. Portola Ave. For more information call the school office at 941-6174.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
