Although Dolores Sandoval’s resignation does not take place until Jan. 7, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District is actively recruiting to fill the seat by appointment.

“We are too late for the March election process and there are no items slated for the June election, so the entire cost of a special election would be ours,” said Leo Chavez, district chancellor. “A special election would cost the district over $1 million, so we should proceed with the appointment process.”

Trustee Judith Moss requested an election to retain the democratic process; but because of the excessive cost, she agreed to an appointment. The seat must be filled within 60 days after Jan. 7.

“Everything we do must be in open session,” Chavez said. “The amount of people who apply could be more than the board can handle so there has to be a screening program.”

The board reviewed a draft submitted by the staff listing suggested procedures and criteria for appointment. Experience, expertise, diversity, geographic balance and willingness to stand for election in November 2002 will all be considered.

There will be an orientation meeting for applicants within 10 days after the close of the 30-day recruitment period.

“No matter what the board decides, there will be an outside influence, including interviews from other boards in the district,” Chavez said.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
