City prepares residents for disaster

The Mountain View Chamber of Commerce has scheduled an Emergency Preparedness Forum 8:30-10 a.m., Thursday, at 1000 Villa St.

Organizers said they have received numerous inquiries from residents about the safety and security of their health, homes and businesses over recent weeks.

“This forum is a great opportunity to learn about preparing for any emergency: flood, fire and earthquakes.

“Planning for these scenarios means being better prepared for terrorist attacks,” said Lynn Brown, coordinator for the Office of Emergency Services, Mountain View Fire Department.

The forum is co-sponsored by the American Red Cross, Palo Alto and the Mountain View police and fire departments. Continental breakfast will be provided.

The American Red Cross will also have safety and emergency preparedness products available for purchase.

Power outage leaves residents in the dark

A mechanical problem left thousands of residents in Los Altos, Los Gatos and Saratoga without power Nov. 26.

PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said the outage was still under investigation Friday.

Last week’s storm had nothing to do with the power failure.

It appears that there was some sort of transmission problem, Smith said.

About 22,000 people initially lost power, he said. PG&E restored power to all but 9,000 customers, mostly in Los Gatos, less than an hour after the power failure, he said.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
