By Blach holiday faire scheduled

Blach Junior High School students will offer handcrafted goods during a holiday faire set for 12:30-4 p.m., Dec. 7, at the school, 1120 Covington Road, Los Altos.

Items for sale will include holiday decorations, jewelry, hair accessories, candy, food items, toys and candles.

Organizers said the event provides an opportunity for students to learn about marketing. Through the fair, students develop, price, package and sell their product. Students earn money for themselves and return 10 percent of the profits to Blach. For more information, call 964-1197.

Winter concert at Mtn. View High

The Mountain View High School Music Department is scheduled to present an evening of music at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 11, at the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. The program features the high school’s symphonic band, jazz ensemble, wind ensemble and string orchestra.

Tickets are $7 and $5 at the door. For more information, call 903-6000.

High schools rated ‘good,’ not great

High school graduates of the class of 2001 tend to give positive evaluations to their high school education according to ACT, the company best known for its college entrance and placement exams. The majority (61 percent) of ACT-tested seniors who graduate in 2001 rated their high school education at least “good.” Fewer than two in 10 (18 percent) rated it “excellent.”Nearly a fourth of those who took a college-preparation program of courses rated their high school education “excellent.”

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
