he Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees is looking for a replacement to fill Dolores Sandoval’s seat. With two years remaining as a board member, Sandoval ran in the Nov. 6 election for a seat on the Cupertino City Council and won. She must vacate her Foothill-De Anza board seat.
Sandoval, a Cupertino resident, will be sworn in on the Cupertino council today. Nov. 12 was her last Foothill-De Anza board meeting.
Chancellor Leo Chavez discussed the procedure for selecting a trustee to fill the board vacancy.
“The selection must take place in open session.
Everything is open to the public and specifically the way each board member votes,” Chavez said.
“The next election will be in two years and I’m in favor of an appointment,” said Trustee Mary Mason.
“The cost to fill one seat would be too expensive for the district.”
The board advised Chavez to establish a recommended procedure to fill the vacancy.
“We could have 30 people apply for this vacancy and it would take a lot of time,” Chavez said.
The board voted that should a vacancy occur, there should be a selection process prepared by Chancellor Chavez. The motion passed 4-0 with Sandoval abstaining.
“I’m the one abstaining, because I think you’re talking about me,” Sandoval said.
