Lokahi Volleyball Club, for girls ages 12-18, has scheduled tryouts for Saturday, and Dec. 1, 2 and 9 in the Mountain View High gym. Cost is $10. Players must attend at least two consecutive tryouts to be considered and register 15 minutes before each tryout. For times and more information, call Mountain View High varsity volleyball coach Peter Kim at 565-8888.

Call for coaches

Blach Junior High is looking for boys basketball coaches for the upcoming season, which runs Dec. 10 to Feb. 15. Coaches are needed to head the grade 7 and 8 teams, plus the C team (for players 5-foot-3 and under). If interested, call Blach athletic director Steve Kane at 969-5063.

Wanted: LAHS alums

Los Altos High boys basketball coach Paul Mansingh is seeking former Los Altos athletes interested in playing in an alumni basketball game against this year’s varsity team. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Nov. 20, in the Los Altos gym. For more information, call 960-8855.

Meet Mathias

Bob Mathias, Olympic gold-medalist and Stanford University alum, is set to appear at the Stanford Bookstore noon to 2 p.m., Friday, to sign copies of his new autobiography, “A Twentieth Century Odyssey, The Bob Mathias Story.” Mathias is the youngest person ever to win a gold medal in the Olympic decathlon and the only American to win it twice.

The MV-LA Strikers, a CYSA Class 1, under-12 boys soccer team, has openings for experienced players for the upcoming District and State cups, as well as the spring season. Birthday must be after Aug. 1, 1989. For more information, call coach Simon Weiss at 743-5857.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
