By Astronomy lecture at Foothill College

Astronomer Dr. Lynn Cominsky of California State University, Sonoma, will present “Exploding Stars, Blazing Galaxies and Giant Black Holes: The Extreme Universe of Gamma-ray Astronomy,” an illustrated nontechnical lecture, 7-8:30 p.m., tonight, in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Admission is free, the public is invited. Visitors must purchase a $2 parking permit. For more information, call 949-7888.

Woodside Priory presents play

Woodside Priory School has scheduled “The Thread That Runs So True,” a play set in 1925 about a 17-year-old student who takes over a one-room school house in Kentucky, 7 p.m., tomorrow, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, at the Woodside Priory Assembly Hall, 302 Portola Road, Portola Valley. Tickets are $3 for students and seniors and $5 for adults.

Foothill College ‘Alice in Wonderland’

Foothill College will present “Alice in Wonderland,” a play for children 5-12, 10:30 a.m., tomorrow, and 2 p.m., Nov. 17 and 18, at Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. For more information, call Tyler Risk at 949-7417.

Oak School Holiday Faire

The 27th annual Oak Holiday Faire is scheduled 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, at Oak Avenue Elementary School. The faire features over 30 Bay Area crafts people, including a special Children’s Table featuring affordable gifts under $5. For more information, call 964-2187.

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
