By New Los Altos police chief, policemen and firemen on hand to lend support

Town Crier Staff Report

Doing its part to help those still suffering in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a local Jazzercise class raised more than $3,800 for the Los Altos Peace Officers Association, which in turn will donate the funds to the American Red Cross, the New York Police Survivors Fund and the New York Firefighters 9-11 Relief Fund.

New Los Altos Police Chief Donald Johnson, along with Los Altos police (including the K-9 Unit) and firefighters, were on hand Nov. 3 at Egan Intermediate School to support the special benefit Jazzercise class, taught by Georgi Shea.

More than 60 students purchased raffle tickets and T-shirts and worked up a sweat to a set of dance tunes from the 1970s and 1980s.

Class members also helped secure raffle prizes including yoga classes, a complimentary massage, Handspring Visor personal digital assistants, a Palm Pilot and more.

The police and fire contingent drew the names for the raffle and awarded the prizes.

“People wanted so much to be able to do something to help the September 11 attack victims and their families,” said Shea.

“By teaming up with the Los Altos Peace Officers Association, we have found a way to heighten the impact of a few people and hopefully make a real difference for those who are still struggling.”

The Los Altos Peace Officers Association is still raising funds to benefit the Sept. 11 victims and their families.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
