Foothill College Sports Roundup

The Foothill College football team secured second place in the NCFA’s Golden Gate Division last Saturday with a 51-13 home win over San Jose City College.

The Owls (3-1, 6-3) overwhelmed the Jaguars (0-3, 4-5) with a balanced attack that racked up 541 yards of offense. Foothill rushed for 243 yards and passed for 298.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Owls coach Marshall Sperbeck said. “We knew we were the better team, and the kids did a good job of getting on them early and then finished them off.”

Foothill led 31-0 at the half.

The Owls had plenty of stars on offense, led by quarterback Waye Terry. Bouncing back from a rough game against division champ San Francisco, Terry completed 23 of 31 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran 12 times for 71 yards and a score.

One of Terry’s touchdown tosses went to Gunn High product Kenny Coleman, a sophomore receiver who made four catches for 64 yards.

On the ground, Los Altos High graduate Steven Holloway had 17 rushes for 96 yards and running mate Peter Shields carried 11 times for 77 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Foothill defense allowed San Jose only 178 yards of offense, made an interception and recovered a fumble.

“The defense played great,” Sperbeck said.

Foothill closes the regular season at home Saturday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game against Shasta (4-5).

Women’s volleyball

Foothill sunk to 2-5 in the Golden Gate Conference North Division last Friday, falling to visiting Chabot 27-30, 26-30, 29-31.

“We had good, solid passing from Minyoung Kim and Jessie Hopkins, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome Chabot,” Owls coach Dave Garbo said.

Foothill (9-9 overall) concludes its season today with a 6:30 p.m. match at Hartnell.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
