Los Altos High School Learning Community students took part in a nationwide “Peace Fast,” Nov. 7-9.
Students Aaron Zonka, Forrest Scott, Jason Ciremele, Jenny Cade, Lee Miller, Mikhail Holst, Sam Harkness and Will Coonrod participated in the fast, initiated by students at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
“We are fasting to protest recent military action in Afghanistan,” said the students’ press release. “We believe that there are many ways to address terrorism, and violent military action against ‘enemy’ civilians and soldiers alike is both largely ineffective and immoral.”
The students said they see the 72-hour hunger strike as an action in solidarity with suffering people around the world.
“We feel that the concerns of youth in this country are too often under-represented in governmental and military affairs,” their press release stated. “We want our voices to be heard and we want to be taken seriously.”
Other organizations and schools participating in the fast included the University of California at Santa Cruz and Los Angeles, Pitzer College, Pomona College, California State University at Humboldt, Boston College, Boston Campus Anti-War Coalition and the Los Angeles Coalition for World Peace.
