Fall Sports Roundup

Both Los Altos and Mountain View highs have qualified runners for Saturday’s Central Coast Section cross country championships at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

Based on performances at last week’s SCVAL El Camino Division meet, the entire boys and girls teams from Los Altos will compete at CCS, and three girls from Mountain View will take part individually.

The Los Altos boys finished fourth at the league meet, which took place on the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs Oct. 30. The Eagles top runners included Ramsey Ackad (eighth, 16:43), Taff Dirks (10th, 16:52), Jeremy Taylor (18th, 17:19), Miles Prowse (22nd, 17:30), Matt Weiden (23rd, 17:34) and Andrew Buysse (24th, 17:39).

The Los Altos girls took fifth at the league meet. Top finishers were Laura Perry (13th, 20:33), Vivian Chiu (14th, 20:37), Lindsey Fish (26th, 21:39), Merissa Periana (27th, 21:42) and Amanda Keller (35th, 22:14).

Mountain View is sending Emilie Doolittle (20th, 21:15 at league), Fara Husain (21st, 21:18) and Emilie Allen (24th, 21:34) to the CCS meet.

“This year’s competition was a very exciting one,” Mountain View coach Samantha Read said of the league meet. “With only the top four teams qualifying to CCS, we knew we were in for a tough one. It was a hard-fought battle and, despite every one of the girls running personal bests in the neighborhood of 30 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds, the girls placed sixth.”

The Mountain View boys also finished sixth, led by sophomore Chris Blood (29th, 18:07), Jeff Audett (31st, 18:17) and Adriel Rodriguez (32nd, 18:19)

Los Altos and Mountain View will be running in Division III at the CCS meet, set for 2:50 p.m. (boys) and 3:25 p.m. (girls).

Girls tennis

As expected, Pinewood School sophomore Lejla Hodzic captured the Private Schools Athletic League tournament Oct. 30.

Top-seeded Hodzic, undefeated this season, beat a player from Harker 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the finals at Pinewood.

In the doubles championship, Paula Lea and Mele Pelea defeated a Notre Dame-San Jose team 6-3, 7-5. In the semifinals, Lea-Pelea beat teammates Irene Guerra and Anne-Yung Yeh 6-3, 6-3.

St. Francis swept the SCVAL De Anza Division individual championships, played last week at Saratoga High.

Top seed Stephanie Schnitter beat Monta Vista’s Carmen Seremeta 6-2, 6-1 Thursday to win the singles crown

In doubles, Lancers Laura Boskovich-Megan Kawahara defeated Palo Alto’s Jossy Tseng and Dory Gannes 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

“They played pretty well and crushed them,” St. Francis coach Lynn Horiye said.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
